Celebrating 25 Years
We are thrilled to commemorate a remarkable milestone – 25 years of Marketplace Gungahlin! Since its humble beginnings, Marketplace has grown alongside the vibrant community of Gungahlin. As we prepare to level up and embark on an exciting new phase of growth with Level Up, we want to celebrate with our community the journey we have gone through together.
From the very beginning, Marketplace Gungahlin has stood as a beacon of progress. In August 1998, our doors were officially opened by then-Chief Minister Kate Carnell. Back then, we were a lone building surrounded by vast paddocks. With 30 retailers, including the anchor store Woolworths, Stage 1 marked the start of our journey.
Fast forward to October 2005, and we proudly unveiled Stage 2 of Marketplace Gungahlin. It was a momentous occasion as then-Chief Minister Jon Stanhope inaugurated the expansion. Spanning 17,000 square metres, Stage 2 welcomed BIG W, along with a diverse range of specialty retailers, food outlets, and ample car parks. It was a significant step towards catering to the evolving needs of our community.
November 2016 marked another exciting chapter for Marketplace Gungahlin with the opening of Stage 3. This stage involved the transformation of an existing on-grade car park into a new retail development. The introduction of a two-level basement car park, now known as P1 & P2, and the Kmart Entry on Hibberson Street created a fresh and inviting pedestrian entry to the Centre. We also welcomed the arrival of Kmart, along with over 25 specialty stores and enhanced amenities. As part of this stage, we refreshed our facade and logo, embracing a new chapter of growth and community engagement.
Throughout the past 25 years, we have been committed to being more than just a shopping destination. We have stood alongside the Gungahlin community, providing a space for neighbors to connect, families to bond, and memories to flourish. From supporting you during challenging times to celebrating your milestones and successes, we have been privileged to be a part of your journey.
