Local sporting hero
Gungahlin is the home of some great sporting clubs. They play a huge role in developing the sporting skills and team experience for many young kids. But these clubs rely on volunteer support so that our kids can play every week and have a great experience on and off the field.
Aimee Kable was the Gungahlin Jets Junior Jet of the Year for 2015. I had a chat to Aimee about why she got involved as a volunteer and what it means for her kids to play in the local Aussie rules sporting club.
“The Gungahlin Jets is a family oriented club and my two sons joined as rookies back in 2010/11 when they were 5 and are still playing and loving the game at 9 and 11 years. Whilst it’s great fitness, local club sport also fosters friendships, camaraderie and is a lot of fun – that stays with them for life”.
“I have always loved sport, followed the Adelaide Crows as a teenager and when my boys started playing footy, I wanted to help create that great experience for all families involved. It started with being a team manager and now my role at the Gungahlin Jets Juniors is as Secretary and Volunteer Coordinator.”
Aimee says her goal is to continue to build on the community experience of being part of a great local sporting club. “It’s up to all of us to help foster community spirit. The more we contribute and give back, the greater the game day and club experience will be for the players and their families.”
Aimee was awarded the 2016 Junior Jet of the Year accolade which recognizes a person who has been an outstanding contributor to the club in which their attitude to and enthusiasm for the Jets will have been an inspiration to all. Not only was she the Secretary and Volunteer Coordinator but was the major driver in the success of the Jets Canteen which is a valuable source of income for the Jets. Ensuring the Jets had a reliable Canteen Manager & the introduction of a new and healthy range of items for families resulted in the Jets being the 1st AFL club in Canberra to achieve Level 1 accreditation of the Good Sports + Healthy Eating Program run by the Australian Drug Foundation which aims to create healthier, safer and family-friendlier sporting environments.
